Basic Beers: Poll Reveals the Most Popular Brands at Top Pubs

broken image

Trade publication Drinks International recently released its poll of the most popular beers in the world. The results are largely unsurprising. The survey of the top 106 bars in the world reflects the market domination of brands with big marketing budgets. Heineken, Guinness, Budweiser, and Corona all made the top ten. While beer enthusiasts may feel disheartened by the results, the ten most popular brews tell a story worth a second look.

The Budweiser of Japan...and Italy...and Mexico

Visit any country and you'll find their version of Budweiser. While Japan's Asahi Super Dry is made from rice and Mexico's Corona demands a lime garnish, the brands all have on thing in common: drinkability. While hardly duplicates of Budweiser, Peroni, Stella, and Estrella Damm all share an everyman likability. It's no surprise these beers all made the top ten list.

Why Basic Isn't Bad

While Budweiser, Peroni and other "basic" beers won't win prizes for novelty or creativity, there's something undeniably appealing about these kinds of brews. Basic might be a bit boring, but there's something comforting about the universality of these beers. If anything, this survey reveals the staying power of big brands and the room craft breweries have for growth.
